Exhibition opening wonderland I wunderland

Tomorrow, September 16th, will be the opening of our exhibition wonderland I wunderland, at the NordseeMuseum Husum, Nissenhaus, Herzog-Adolf-Straße 25
25813 Husum, Germany – and it will be the first time that images from both parts of the wonderland project will be shown, so there will be American and Northern German impressions.

Opening reception will be at 11:30am – and we’d love to see you, chat with you, watch our wonderland movie together with you, have a glass of … with you. Come and celebrate with us.

manpower in Rome

Douglas Stockdale is a photographer who also writes about photo books on his blog The Photo Book. This year he was invited to curate the photo book exhibition of the 2012 FOTOGRAFIA – Festival Internazionale di Roma. The festival will run from September 20th to October 28th 2012 at the MACRO – Museo d’Arte Contemporanea Roma. This year’s theme is „WORK“ and Douglas chose my book manpower to be in the exhibition – and he also just published a review of manpower on his blog … – needless to say I’m very happy about this.

BTW, you can still order your copy of manpower through my Web site

Paris Umbrea by Edouard Mortec

French photographer Edouard Mortec lives in Paris – and he seems to really like it. So much in fact that he invites us to become locals as well. In his self-published book Paris Umbrae Mortec takes us on a walk through Paris‘ shadows introducing us not necessarily to a darker side, more to a casual one. Through his images, first published on his blog, we become bystanders of everyday life, spending our time in the Metro or on avenues far away from tourist attractions. The limited edition Paris Umbrae is a beautiful walk through another side of the city of lights – which you can order directly from the author through his Web site.

Alexander Berdysheff, painter

Tbilisi, Georgia, has an amazing treasure of artists – one of them is the painter Alexander Berdysheff. While we were in town for the punctum contra punctum exhibition, we were also able to see a first retrospective of his work exhibited at the Vanda Gallery. And while the show is already over you can still get an idea of his work on the gallery’s Web site or at saatchi online. I highly recommend to check it out …

TIME Magazine

The American TIME Magazine just ran a story about my hometown Kiel, offering tips about where to go and what to do during Kiel Sailing Week, the world’s biggest sailing event – with photographs made by … me.

Happy to see that in print …

Punctum contra punctum

The opening of the group exhibition puntcum contra punctum was a fabulous success – 19 artists and several hundred visitors gathering in a beautiful museum in Tbilisi, Georgia, to celebrate the visual arts. A very special thank you goes out to the organizers Maka Razmadze and Alex Berdysheff for having done a fantastic job.

What’s your price?

@duckrabbitblog recently posted an article discussing photojournalist Ron Haviv selling some of his work to arms manufacturer Lockheed Martin for their ad campaign. And started a vivid discussion about whether or not this is morally sustainable especially from a respected member of photo agency VII or whether we as photographers should draw a line when to refuse revenue because it would come from the wrong people, companies, media outlets.

Even though there seems to be an obvious answer – meaning yes, we should – it’s not as easy as that. For me, I do have my standards and no gos. Then again, I am a human being and as such flawed which is why I cannot say that I always lived up to my own moral beliefs and standards. But I’m working on it. So here’s to all the people now ranting about Ron Haviv being a disgrace to the guild of socially committed (photo-)journalists: before you throw that stone, think …

And for all who care to read some very interesting thoughts adding to the discussion check out Ron Haviv’s response, Colin Pantall’s What’s for sale, War enabling: Duckrabbit vs. Haviv and VII in a Larger Context at BagNews, Stella Kramer’s Making the Hard Choices or – as always – Conscientious. Very good food for thought.

Moving on to Tbilisi

After a very successful premiere of our wonderland movie in Kiel we’re packing selected images of wonderland to move on to Tbilisi, Georgia.

We are once again invited to the capital of Georgia to participate in the group exhibition punctum contra punctum, organized by ART CONTACT TBILISI, taking place from June 10th to 21st, at the Georgian National Museum, Rustaveli Avenue, right in the heart of Tbilisi.

Really looking forward to once again being able to share the work with our friends and the people in this amazing city.
